Captain Kevin Hiller is a lifelong resident of Jackson County and a graduate of Jackson High School. He proudly served in the United States Marine Corps in an infantry battalion, receiving an honorable discharge in 1988. Following his military service, Captain Hiller began a distinguished career in law enforcement in August 1989 with the Jackson Police Department.
Promoted to Patrol Officer in 1991, Captain Hiller went on to serve in a variety of assignments, including Detective, Administrative Officer, School Liaison Officer, and Narcotics Officer with the Concentrated Response Against Crime (CRAC) Unit. In 1998, he was promoted to Sergeant and served on patrol, in operations support, with the Special Response Team as an operator and negotiator, and on the Jackson Narcotics Enforcement Team (JNET). In 2006, Captain Hiller was awarded the Medal of Honor—the highest distinction bestowed by the Jackson Police Department—for extraordinary heroism well beyond the normal call of duty. He also received the Distinguished Service Award from the Michigan Association of Chiefs of Police for the same incident. After 27 years of faithful service, he retired from the Jackson Police Department in 2016.
Following retirement, Captain Hiller continued his public service as a Special Agent with the Michigan Attorney General’s Office, where he investigated high-dollar fraud, embezzlement, and elder abuse cases. In May 2021, he joined the Jackson County Office of the Sheriff, where he currently serves as Patrol Division Commander.
Captain Hiller holds a master’s degree with an emphasis in Business and Organizational Management from Spring Arbor University. He is a graduate of the Northwestern School of Police Staff and Command, the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce Leadership Academy, and the FBI-LEEDA Trilogy, including the Supervisor Leadership Institute, Command Leadership Institute, and Executive Leadership Institute. He has also completed multiple levels of Incident Command System training through the United States Department of Justice.
Captain Hiller is married to his wife, Rachael, and together they have four children: Whitney, Keegan, Mary-Kate, and Brady. He remains actively involved in the community, serving on the boards of advisors for the Child Advocacy Center, Jackson County Office of Emergency Management and Homeland Security, the Jackson Career Center Criminal Justice Program, and the Salvation Army.
