Mike Coburn


Lieutenant Coburn began his career in criminal justice working juveniles at Starr Commonwealth in Albion, Michigan.   He then transitioned to the adult system and started as a correctional officer with the Jackson County Office of the Sheriff in 2006.  In 2012, Michael was recognized as Correctional Officer of the year.  In 2013, Michael was promoted to the rank of sergeant.  Less than two years later, Michael was promoted to his current rank of lieutenant.  Lieutenant Coburn graduated from Kellogg Community College Magna Cum Laude with an Associate’s Degree in Corrections.  Lieutenant Coburn then graduated Magna Cum Laude from Baker College with a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice.  

Lieutenant Coburn has been instrumental in adding several security enhancements such as perimeter security, closed circuit video recording, added high definition cameras in many blind spot areas in both facilities, along with implementing body cameras for all corrections officers.  In addition, Lieutenant Coburn raised the funds to equip all of the transport officers in the corrections division with their own fitted ballistics vests.

Lieutenant Coburn has introduced tablets to the inmates that provide GED courses, video visitation, employment searches, substance abuse resources and access to the law library.  

Lieutenant Coburn resides in the County of Jackson with his wife, Katrina and children, Brady and Madison.  In his spare time he enjoys traveling and experiencing cultures from around the world.
