Captain Anthony Stewart was born and raised in Lansing Michigan and graduated from Everett High School in 1986. After graduation, Captain Stewart started his career with the Michigan Department of Corrections (MDOC) in 1987, at the age of 19 as a Corrections Officer. In 1988, Captain Stewart took a military leave of absence to join the United States Marine Corps. (USMC). After serving in the Infantry and being honorably discharged Captain Stewart returned to the MDOC and was steadily promoted to a variety of custody levels during his career, giving him the experience and knowledge of all facets of correctional facilities within the MDOC, ranging from Correctional Officer to Senior Executive Warden. During Captain Stewart’s career with the MDOC, he also served as Assistant Commander of the Emergency Response Team (ERT), Honor Guard, and Security Threat Group (Gang) Coordinator. Captain Stewart retired after 32-years of service with the MDOC in 2019, serving his last five years as Senior Executive Warden.
One of the highlights of Captain Stewart’s career with the MDOC came with a project Director Dan Heyns (former Jackson County Sheriff) of the MDOC asked him to undertake. Specifically, Captain Stewart was asked to develop a strategy to establish Central Booking for the Detroit Police Department (DPD), as their Agency had been under a consent decree for over 11-years with the Department of Justice (DOJ). This operation encompassed an inter-agency agreement between the MDOC and the DPD where Captain Stewart was named to develop a strategy to establish Central Booking for the DPD at the Detroit Detention Center (DDC). The project was a huge success and in less than a year the consent decree against the DPD was resolved by the DOJ. Captain Stewart received the MDOC Professional Excellence Award from MDOC Director Dan Heyns and the Governance Symbol of Excellence from Governor Rick Snyder for his work on the project.
Captain Stewart has always had a desire to serve the community. Captain Stewart served as Adjunct Professor at Baker College for twelve years at both the Jackson and Owosso campuses teaching a variety of criminal justice and psychology courses. Upon retirement from the MDOC in 2019, Captain Stewart was also hired by Ferris State University (FSU) and Jackson College (JC) as an Adjunct Professor. Captain Stewart taught courses in criminal justice at FSU and a variety of courses in criminal justice, business, and psychology at JC. Captain Stewart has also served on a variety of boards and committees including Senator Marshall Bullock’s Criminal Justice Reform Committee, the NAACP Public Safety and Criminal Justice Committee, and the Baker College Criminal Justice Advisory Board.
Academically, Captain Stewart earned a Bachelor’s Degree (BA), in Criminal Justice from Siena Heights University, a Master’s Degree in Public Administration (MPA), from the Horace Rackham School of Graduate Studies at the University of Michigan, and has completed the degree requirements and is currently in dissertation phase for a Doctoral of Philosophy (Ph.D.), in General Psychology, with an Emphasis in Industrial/Organizational Psychology to broaden his psychological awareness, knowledge of organizational development, and improve his leadership acumen.
Captain Stewart has been happily married to his wife Tina for 22 years and has three children, Michael, Jasmine, and Anthony II.
