The Great American Smoke Out is a great opportunity to give up tobacco products and start a new tobacco free lifestyle. Preparation is key in making these first 24 hours successful. Let your family, friends, co-workers and other important people know what you are trying to accomplish. Ask for their support. Have a supply of items on hand that you can use to take your mind off of the desire for the nicotine - straws or cinnamon sticks for inhaling through to slow breathing or to gently chew on, sugarfree hard candy or veggies for something to do with your hands and mouth, rubber bands to zap your wrist and take your mind away from the desire for nicotine and music or books to give your mind something else to think about.
Remember the Four D's when you are trying to quit:
Delay - Delay having a cigarette - The average craving only last about 10 minutes or so.
Drink - Drink lots of water to help clean the toxins out of your body.
Do - Do something else or Distract yourself by going on a walk, etc.
Deep Breath - Take deep cleansing breaths as it is both relaxing and calming.
You should also have the number of a friend on speed dial in case you experience a weak moment and you need to talk to someone right away. Good luck on your new future with a tobacco free
